What’s in, what isn’t

Coverage

Last updated October 25, 2026

65 of Florida’s 67 counties have pages, with 1,075,621 well records. They come from one statewide snapshot of every public water management district well-construction layer we can use (v2026-10-25, pulled October 25, 2026, 1,715,247 agency records before filtering): Northwest Florida, Suwannee River, St. Johns River, Southwest Florida, and South Florida’s district-issued layer. The site rebuilds from that snapshot monthly.

South Florida household wells are mostly permitted by counties and cities, so they are not in those district layers. Counties without a page have no figures here, and we don’t fill the gaps with estimates.

South Florida Water Management District7270Only permits SFWMD issues itself (Monroe, Charlotte, and wells of 12 inches or more in Broward). Depths are from the permit, with no well use, so none are kept. Everywhere else in the district, county health departments, Lee and Collier counties and the City of Cape Coral issue well permits, and those records aren’t in this layer.

“Kept” means the record passed the filters in the methodology (reported depth, water-supply use, usable location) and lies in a Florida county. Counts include counties without a page.

“Kept of” counts the agency records whose point falls inside the county, and how many survived the filters. Every county with at least one kept record has a page.

Thin counties. Broward, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and St. Lucie have fewer than 100 water-supply wells with a reported depth, so their figures are rough. In South Florida, the few records we hold come from other districts’ layers.

Partial counties. Part of Broward, Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Lee, Martin, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Polk and St. Lucie counties lie in the South Florida Water Management District, where we have no household well records. Their pages say how much is missing and which towns are affected. In St. Lucie, for example, that leaves out Port St. Lucie itself.

CountyWhy
Miami-DadeNone of the 103 district records here pass the filters. Household wells are permitted by the county health department.
MonroeNone of the 380 district records here pass the filters. Household wells are permitted by the county health department.

For these counties, the official sources are the county health department (which issues most well permits in South Florida) and the South Florida Water Management District.

Not included

  • USGS groundwater sites. These are mostly observation wells with no use recorded, so they’d stay out of household figures anyway. They aren’t in the snapshot.
  • Delegated South Florida permits. Well permits issued by county health departments, Lee and Collier counties and the City of Cape Coral live in separate systems, not all machine-readable.
  • ZIP codes from the snapshot. The snapshot’s ZIP column is empty in this version. We place each well in a Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area and town ourselves, from Census boundaries.

What’s next

Each published rebuild is listed in the changelog. South Florida household wells need county and city permit records, which aren’t in the district layers. A county shows up here when those records are included.
